On Sunday October 5th, Coin opened up their sixth night of their I’m Not Afraid of Tour Anymore headline tour to celebrate the release of their sixth album, I’m Not Afraid Of Music Anymore.
Opener Aidan Bissett took the stage around 8:00 pm. Bissett’s career took off after his hit song “More Than Friends” gained traction on TikTok during the pandemic in 2020. Fans in the general admission pit rocked out to Bissetts performance as if he was the headliner. Aidan Bissett’s performance set the tone for the rest of the night as fans anxiously waited for Coin to make their entrance at the Old National Centre.
The band took the stage led by frontman Chase Lawrence, kicking the night off with the first track from their recent album, “It’s Hard To Care About Everything.” This was followed by “Take It Or Leave It” the second track and second single of their most recent album.
Joe Memmel (guitar/vocals), Zach Dyke (bass), Ryan Winnen (drums), and frontman Chase Lawrence (guitar/synth/vocals) performed a variety of tracks from their six albums together, in front of an impressive digital backdrop – often reading the the titles or lyrics from the songs. An old style TEAC tape recorder sat on the stage, as well as Lawrence’s vintage-styled synth board.
Chase announced at the beginning of the set, that the band had officially performed at both venues in Indianapolis’s Old National Centre. The Egyptian Room and the Murat Theatre.
Chase Lawrence is to say the least, an electric performer. After a night full of jumping across the stage, shredding the guitar and synth, and singing his absolute heart out – all while dressed in a long sleeved sweater and pants – I can only imagine the sleep that guy had. You can 100% tell that he was born to perform in front of a crowd.
The group is labeled as an indie rock band, interestingly enough with southern roots. Coin originated at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.
“Talk Too Much,” the track from their sophomore album How Will You Ever Know If You Never Try, was performed towards the end of the set – and was arguably the most electric part of the night. The crowd went absolutely nuts as the band performed their most iconic song. The track itself has over 310 million streams on spotify.
The moment I’ll remember the most from the night was when the band performed their most emotional song “Let It All Out (10:05).” Every concert has that moment where you are like “Woah.” This performance has been deemed my “Woah” moment. My favorite thing about live shows is when it feels like there is a connection between the band and the crowd, that feeling of “We are here, right now, living, together.” This performance did not sell me anything short of that.
The encore ended the night where the group performed “Crash My Car” from their third studio album Dreamland and “Strawberry Jam,” the first single released off the album the tour was promoting.
If you ever get the opportunity to see Coin perform live, do not pass it up. No matter what music taste you have – not enjoying the show is something I have officially deemed impossible.
