Regarding April 29, 2025
Severe weather is expected to impact the Muncie area Tuesday night. The system is expected to develop tomorrow over the Central Plains before moving eastward into the upper Midwest. The associated cold front is expected to bring a line of severe thunderstorms to most of the Great Lakes Region including Eastern Indiana and Western Ohio.
As of today, the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 2: Slight Risk for all of Eastern Indiana. The primary concern for this system is strong straight-line winds around 60 – 80 mph. Weather models are trending more away from a higher tornado chance, a few isolated tornados in the region cannot be discounted due to upper-level wind dynamics. Large hail remains as a lower threat in this system but as thunderstorms develop small hail can develop.
At the moment the weather team at WCRD is monitoring this situation very closely and wants to take a moment to remind everyone of some storm safety tips ahead of Tuesday:
- When Thunder Roars Go Indoors!
- When thunder Roars move indoors immediately to better protect yourself from lightning. All outdoor actives should be brought inside or cancelled. Stay away from tall objects like buildings, trees, and telephone poles.
- Turn Around Don’t Drown!
- Major flooding is not currently expected with this system; however, localized flooding is possible. It only takes six inches of water to stall out a vehicle and even less to cause a vehicle to hydroplane. If you encounter flooded areas, either slow down or turn around in times of flooding and seek alternate routes – water depth is often hard to judge.
- Stay Weather Aware!
- Staying weather aware means that you have multiple ways to get weather information in the event of a Severe Thunderstorm. This could be NOAA Weather Radios, your local broadcast station, social media, smartphone, or computer. In the result of severe weather, Weather Director Tyler Miller will be live on our Facebook page, WCRD 91.3 FM.
As always, the WCRD weather team will be monitoring the situation as it develops and will continue to update here and, on our socials, as more information becomes available.
